The White Lodge Hotel, Chart Room Bar

The bar of the White Lodge Hotel, aka the Chart Room, is open to non-residents from 12 noon-11pm. The bar features superb views across Filey Bay and down The Crescent. You can take your drink into the garden or the lounge bar, whose bay window offers some of the best coastal views anywhere.

The quality of the drink offering marks the White Lodge out, not just in Filey, but probably along the entire coastline. The wines are not slavishly from the New World or stubbornly from the Old. Whilst a New Zealand Viognier maybe present, you won’t have to look too hard to find a reliable claret.

There is a good selection of single malt Scotch whiskies, plus a decent smattering from further afield. Of course, gin lovers are not ignored and whilst the Lodge can’t boast five hundred gins, the ones they have picked reflect extensive research!

From Taittinger to Timothy Taylors; there’s something for all tastes at the White Lodge.

White Lodge Hotel

Located at the end of Filey’s famous Crescent, the White Lodge enjoys stunning views of Filey Bay and Brigg from every room, be it bedrooms, dining room or the bar.

The hotel has twenty double en-suite rooms and three, 2-bedroom holiday apartments. Visitors and guests enjoy a restaurant, bar and lounge bar as well as a large outside terrace. There is also a private dining room for parties and special events.

The outside terrace is often packed in the summer sunshine and some hardy souls even wrap up to enjoy it in the cooler months. More sensible folk sit by one of the log fires in the lounge taking in the view.

The White Lodge was built in 1856 as a private residence known as ‘the South Crescent Villa’. It however nicknamed ‘the Lodge’, its grounds stretched down to the water edge and boating, sailing and sea fishing were common pastimes for guests.

In the 1890’s the actress Dame Madge Kendal purchased the house with her husband and fellow actor, William H Kendal. The Kendal’s managed the St James Theatre in London and appeared in plays continuously until 1908 when they retired to Filey. Madge was created ‘Dame Grand Cross of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire’ GBE in 1926 and died in 1935, aged 87. Recently a blue plaque commemorating Dame Madge was unveiled above the main entrance.

In 1938 the property was converted to a hotel and, at last, its unofficial name became it official title as it opened for business as the White Lodge Hotel.

Glasshouse

Filey’s newest bar, a reinvention of the Vinery Cafe at the rear of the much-loved Charlottes. The cafe was completely rebuilt over the winter, the new structural steelwork is a particular highlight. On a sunny day the light floods in. It really is a triumph.

During the day drinks and a menu of pizzas (watch out they’re huge), sandwiches, omelettes, burgers and brunch/lunch meals are available. In the evening the menu changes, but be sure to book ahead, as since reopening it is often booked solid, particularly at a weekend.

Worry not, the old vine is safe and well. Indeed, it appears to be thriving in its new home, as is the business itself. A great addition to Filey and somewhere that has set the bar higher.
