Of course, an outdoor event is always subject to the vagaries of the great British weather. Over the weekend winds are forecast to be between 18mph and 20mph. Which equates to a ‘moderate breeze’ on the Beaufort Scale. The BBC are describing Saturday’s wind as a ‘fresh breeze’. However, there are stronger gusts amongst that average wind speed, so we presume that is the reason for the cancellation.

The organisers will be naturally risk averse where the public is concerned, but many of the stall holders will now be facing significant losses, especially those who will have been preparing perishable goods. In the current economic climate this is doubly concerning as the vast majority are small businesses. We can only hope that the cancellation does not stop stall holders returning to, what was becoming, one of THE food festivals in Yorkshire.

We understand that some are rescheduling their weekend events and these are being publicised by the Facebook page of Filey Food Festival.

Over fifty stalls will pack the Crescent Gardens for the Food Festival with a Sea View! Now established as one of the highlights of the year, the food festival will once again see a vast range of delights to eat and drink on sale.

One of the highlights for October’s Food Festival will be Chef Rob Green. He will be on the Evron Centre Patio – his Michelin starred skills on display – free to watch , and to taste , the best seafood available from the local seas.

There’s something for everyone, from Thai street food to gin made in Filey itself. Stalls will be thronging the Crescent Gardens and the Evron patio. The food festival has established itself as a firm favourite on the foodie circuit, but few festivals anywhere can match its extensive views across the bay to Flamborough Head.

The festival runs from Saturday 18th to Sunday 19th. It is entirely free, child and dog friendly.

The ‘food festival with a sea view’ has become a firm-favourite among visitors and locals alike. A vast array of stalls extends from the Evron Centre and down the Crescent Gardens. Offering everything from Thai street food to fresh oysters, real ales to artisan breads, there is something for everyone at the festival. As we are on the run up to Christmas there will be a hot chestnut cart and local craft and gift stalls.

Of course, the days are getting shorter as we approach the end of the year, so the festival hours will be 9am to 3pm. As ever, entry is free, so spend freely!

There will be all the usual great food and drink stalls, too many to mention, there will be everything from fresh seafood, hot chilli sauces, olives, pies, pasties and artisan breads. Perhaps the highlight will be all new the Star Away from Home Bar. Of course, the Star have appeared at the food festival’s in the past, but the Autumn Food Festival marks the debut of their new mobile bar, which was due to make its bow just before the pandemic took hold. Something to raise our collective glasses to!

In some respects the Autumn Food Festival is the first real post-covid festival, as there will be no one way system in operation and many stalls, who previously could not attend because of travel and other restrictions, will be here in force. Admission to the festival is free and the event takes place all day on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th October.

At the spring Food Festival, when we eventually tore ourselves away from the oysters and fizz, we were astonished with the fabulous gourmet scotch eggs that were on sale in the gardens outside the Belle Vue. Who would have thought that you could use the words gourmet and scotch egg in the same sentence. They were absolutely stunning.

Chris Elley and his team have pulled out all the stops to ensure that the event goes ahead, with a one way system in place, stewards to ensure that visitor numbers are kept manageable and increased distancing between stalls (the number of stalls has been reduced from 68 to 35). To enter the stalls in the Evron Gardens, visitors are asked to use the entrance beside the Post Office, for the Crescent Gardens entry will be at the Belle Vue end and exit at the Crescent Hill.

In line with the latest advice from North Yorkshire County Council, it is advisable, but not mandatory, to wear face masks in busy areas, even outdoors.

Once again, let’s hope that the Clerk of the Weather casts a kindly eye over the town and that the final food festival of the year of is a roaring, and safe, success.
