Cycling fans will be disappointed to learn that the 2021 Tour de Yorkshire has been postponed until 2022 due to the on-going Corona virus pandemic. The tough decisions was taken after consultation with international cycling bodies and the host local authorities. The sixth edition of the race had been due to take place between 30th April and 3rd May 2020, but the recent surge of COVID-19 cases meant the event simply became untenable.

Welcome to Yorkshire’s Chief Executive James Mason said:

“During these uncertain times Welcome to Yorkshire need to focus on the immediate needs of the industry without committing both financial and human resources towards any activity or event that we cannot be certain of. Cycling has become synonymous with Yorkshire and the Tour de Yorkshire has become a firm fixture on the world cycling calendar due to the reception the riders and teams receive in our county. Whilst it is very disappointing that we will be bereft of this wonderful race for another year the decision we have made is the right one and perhaps the only one we could make. The uncertainty in front of us meant it was impossible to plan or commit the resource that the race needs. This has been a mutual decision made by Welcome to Yorkshire and the ASO and we will all now look forward to putting all our energies into bringing the race back bigger and better than ever in 2022.”

The race was planned to pass through Filey on its first day, on a coastal route between Beverley and Redcar. Although it will be a huge disappointment to everyone who has Filey, and Yorkshire, at their hearts, the decision is understandable given the uncertainty caused by the Covid pandemic. By postponing to 2022 it will allow businesses and local authorities to plan with absolute certainty that it will take place against a backdrop of a Covid free Yorkshire.

Yann Le Moenner, the Director General of the race organisers Amaury Sport Organisation  said:

“We fully understand Welcome to Yorkshire’s position and are totally associated with this joint decision. We have worked a lot together since the Grand Départ of the Tour de France 2014 to put the Tour de Yorkshire at the top of the international cycling calendar. This work is obviously not wasted and we will collectively do our best to relaunch the event in 2022 and give the chance to the world’s best riders to be on the Yorkshire roads in front of one of the most enthusiastic audiences the cycling world has ever seen.”

The Tour de Yorkshire is of huge economic benefit to the county and its creation followed the success of the 2014 Tour de France’s Grand Départ in Yorkshire. This massively popular event attracted four million roadside spectators, with 188 countries broadcasting the race live contributing to £330m worth of media coverage, with the Grand Depart in Yorkshire trending worldwide on Twitter.

Subsequent Tour de Yorkshires from 2015 to 2019 have also been an incredible success for the county, boosting the economy and showcasing spectacular Yorkshire scenery across the globe. Benefits for the county during the Tour de Yorkshire have included record-breaking figures of 107.5m Twitter reach (2016), 2.6m spectators along the route and a £98m economic impact (2018), plus a TV audience of 28m in 190 countries (2019).

The hotly anticipated visit of the Tour de Yorkshire cycle race to Filey has been postponed because of the ongoing Corona virus outbreak. The Tour de Yorkshire had been scheduled to pass through Filey on 30 April.

The race has become one of the sporting highlights of the Yorkshire year and so its postponement, although sadly inevitable, will cause great disappointment to businesses, residents and visitors alike.

Peter Box CBE, Chair of Welcome to Yorkshire said: “The race is a great spectacle, but we all know that the health and well-being of everyone across the region, and the country, is frankly more important than a sporting event. Our attention now turns to supporting those tourism businesses across the region, many still reeling from the floods, during this unprecedented crisis.”

It is to be hoped that this is a postponement, rather than a complete cancellation. We know that many events planned for Filey, particularly at the start of the summer season, are watching the progress of the Corona virus closely. It is thought that all are expecting to go ahead as planned at the moment, but clearly the situation is fluid and out of everyone’s hands. We will update as soon as we know of any changes.

The organisers of the Tour de Yorkshire cycle race will be hosting a community roadshow in the town between 6pm-8pm on Monday 9 March. The event, being held at the Evron Centre, will offer residents, businesses and community groups advice on how groups and individuals can benefit from the race. It represents a great opportunity to find out more about what is happening in Filey and across Yorkshire during the Tour.

Those interested in attending can register their interest via the Tour de Yorkshire website, or simply turn up on the evening. As previously revealed on our website, the route will be travelling via Muston Road, Station Avenue and Scarborough Road. Unfortunately, due to the south-north direction of the race it is impossible to use the seafront, as there might be a danger that the race leaders would end up crossing the path of the trailing riders as the race would have to double-back on itself. However, the race director has intimated that it is highly likely that the race will revisit Filey in coming years and, if the route is from north to south, the seafront would almost certainly be utilised. The incredible scenes on the Crescent Hill in 2018 are still firmly etched on the minds of the organisers.

The Tour de Yorkshire will pass through Filey on 30 April. It is part of stage one of the men’s race which is travelling from Beverley to Redcar.

The organiser of Tour de Yorkshire has explained the decisions behind the race’s route through Filey on 30 April. As part of the Beverley to Redcar leg of the race, the riders will enter Filey via the Muston Road, Station Avenue and leave the town via the Scarborough Road.

There were hopes that the route might take in the seafront and, in particular, the Crescent Hill where iconic scenes were created when the the race passed through Filey in 2018.

It was suggested to Welcome to Yorkshire’s Commercial Director, Peter Dodd, that the route could go down Ravine Road, along the seafront, up Crescent Hill and rejoin the route at the Station Avenue roundabout.

In Peter’s reply he explained that using the seafront is only viable when the race is travelling from north to south. When going from the south it is impossible to use the seafront as the race would have to come back on itself, with the danger that the leaders would meet the rear of the field. They considered coming down Crescent Hill, but due to the cobbled surface it was thought that the descent had the potential to be unsafe. However, Peter did intimate that the race would return to Filey and the seafront in future years.

The famous cycle race Tour de Yorkshire will be passing through Filey on 30 April. Filey will feature on the 176.5km Beverley to Redcar section of the race. This section essentially takes the race up the entire Yorkshire coastline. The route is Beverley – Hornsea – Bridlington – Flamborough – Filey – Hackness – Cote de Hook – Whitby Abbey – Cote de Lythe – Saltburn-by-the sea – Redcar.

The route misses Scarborough and its seafront for the first time. Full route details can be found on the Tour de Yorkshire website.

The race last passed through Filey in 2018 and gave the race one of its iconic scenes when the riders tacked the Crescent Hill in front of hundreds of spectators. The images were flashed around the world and have been reused time and again on national and international media.

At the moment no exact details of the race’s route in Filey itself is available, although the Tour de Yorkshire’s website shows the route as Muston Road – Station Road – Scarborough Road. It would be a shame if the race did not come along the seafront and recreate the magical scenes on the Crescent Hill. Let’s hope it does!
