New York might seem a strange place to hear idle chat about Filey life, but thanks to two Filey-based broadcasters, that is exactly what is happening. We can only but wonder what people walking down Broadway make of tales of late nights in Foords! But be it Broadway or the Brigg, Times Square or the Three Tuns, the bi-weekly radio show Diggin’ Records is catching people’s ears in the Big Apple.
Currently celebrating its first birthday, the Diggin’ Records show, recorded in Filey, is presented by Philip Hopwood and Tizzy Terrell. The mix of music and jolly chat between the hosts has proved to be a hit with listeners and the show is broadcast by The Face Radio in Brooklyn, New York and Pure 107 based in Glasgow
Phil had a long career in the music industry being based in Manchester and London before returning to his Yorkshire roots. He didn’t quite hang up the mic, as many will know him as the frontman from the local band The Consequences, regular performers across Yorkshire.
Tizzy is one of the north’s best-known Northern Soul DJ’s, his high-quality vinyl only nights, were, prior to the lockdown, a regular feature at Captain Wills and the Top House in Filey. Phil and Tizzy also present a Diggin’ Records DJ set at venues in Filey, Scarborough, Whitby and York.
Phil said: “Tizzy is a very experienced podcaster in the Soul music field, and he thought it would be good to do a show with a wider appeal together, as I grew up listening to Pop & Rock”.
The show is an exciting mix of Pop, Funk, Indie, Soul and Rocksteady with a smattering of banter from the lads.
“We purposefully keep our picks for the show to ourselves until the day of recording, so we can react and chat about the music as we go” says Tizzy. “We also tell stories and talk about or live gigs and other local events and characters”.
