The team behind the Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery at Hunmanby are celebrating winning two prestigious awards. Their Filey Bay Moscatel Finish whisky has been awarded a silver medal and the Filey Bay single malt a bronze at the 2020 International Wines and Spirits Competition. Now in its fifty-first year, the International Wine & Spirit Competition seeks to reward excellence in drinks worldwide, ensuring recognition for the very best wines and spirits. The IWSC sets the international benchmark for quality, with judging handled by hundreds of global experts – including buyers, producers, distillers, sommeliers, distributors and influencers – throughout the year.
Hardly ones to rest on their laurels, the Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery have announced the release of a limited edition sherry cask reserve whisky. Entitled the Filey Bay Sherry Cask Reserve #1, it is limited to only 2,000 bottles. Launched with the festive season in mind, the whisky is aged in Oloroso sherry casks prior to being bottled. Oloroso sherry is known for its nutty aromas, autumnal and wintery notes and full-bodied yet elegant flavour. The whisky has extracted the flavours and cues from the wood over the past three years, creating a rich and spicy single malt that is perfect for the festive season. The staff at the White Lodge Hotel at Filey were the first people to try out the new whisky when Dave Thompson from the distillery dropped in. The whisky was said to be delicious, even at noon!
The Distillery is Yorkshire’s first ever single malt whisky distillery and they organise tours throughout the week, they even have one where you can have a joint tour of their sister venture, the Wold Top Brewery! The Distillery is close to Hunmanby station (leave the car at home!), but there is also a coffee shop, and a driver’s dram pack, for those who can’t prise themselves out of their cars.
